While getting out of debt is a high biblical priority it is as much a wisdom issue as a righteousness one, and requires discernment and good strategy not just a single act of obedience.

If I were you I would take the money I would have spent on the Corvette, and give it to missions and famine relief. Everyone comes out ahead that way—God is glorified, people are kept alive and reached with the gospel, and you will lay up treasures in heaven, and Jesus says your heart will follow your treasures.

I would recommend caution on this. On the one hand, I’m hesitant for church leaders to know how much anyone gives because of the temptation to violate James 2 and treat big givers with favoritism and ignore lesser givers.

Over the last ten years, I’ve been suggesting that we learn how to share testimonies about giving in order to help the body of Christ grow in the grace of giving. 

In Christ’s day, shepherds stood on the bottom rung of the Palestinian social ladder. They shared the same unenviable status as tax collectors and dung sweepers.

When it comes to sexual purity, we don’t have to wonder what God’s will is. Scripture tells us straight out. His expectations of his children are much higher than for those who don’t know him.

“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God.” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5).

At present, the battle front on abortion is not the Supreme Court or the White House. The legal battle on abortion should be directed at our Senators and U.S. Congressmen, as well as our state representatives.

I was on the east coast speaking at one of the finest Christian camps in the country. There in the bookstore, surrounded by great books by J. I. Packer, John Stott and others, was a book called, Selling Yourself on You.
