Life on earth is short, prosperity is fleeting:
(Psalm 39:4-7) Show me, O LORD, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. {5} You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man’s life is but a breath. Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. {7} “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.
(Proverbs 23:4-5) Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. {5} Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.
(Psalm 52:6-7) The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at him, saying, {7} “Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!”
(James 5:1-5) Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. {2} Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. {3} Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. {4} Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. {5} You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.

God does not change:
(Malachi 3:6) I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.
(James 1:17) Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
(Hebrews 13:8) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Circumstances do change:
(Proverbs 27:1) Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.
(James 4:13-17) Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” {14} Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. {15} Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” {16} As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. {17} Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.
Be diligent to look ahead and plan ahead:
(Proverbs 22:3, 27:12) A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
(Proverbs 6:6-11) Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! {7} It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, {8} yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. {9} How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? {10} A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest- {11} and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.
(Genesis 41:26-41) The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years; it is one and the same dream. {27} The seven lean, ugly cows that came up afterward are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain scorched by the east wind: They are seven years of famine. {28} “It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do. {29} Seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt, {30} but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ravage the land. {31} The abundance in the land will not be remembered, because the famine that follows it will be so severe. {32} The reason the dream was given to Pharaoh in two forms is that the matter has been firmly decided by God, and God will do it soon. {33} “And now let Pharaoh look for a discerning and wise man and put him in charge of the land of Egypt. {34} Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance. {35} They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food. {36} This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.” {37} The plan seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his officials. {38} So Pharaoh asked them, “Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?” {39} Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. {40} You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.” {41} So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.”
(Proverbs 27:23-27) Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; {24} for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations. {25} When the hay is removed and new growth appears and the grass from the hills is gathered in, {26} the lambs will provide you with clothing, and the goats with the price of a field. {27} You will have plenty of goats’ milk to feed you and your family and to nourish your servant girls.
(Proverbs 28:19-20) He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty. A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.
(Luke 12:35-40) “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, {36} like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. {37} It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. {38} It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night. {39} But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. {40} You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
(Titus 3:14) Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive lives.
(1 Timothy 5:3-4) Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. {4} But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.
(1 Timothy 5:8) If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
Be a wise financial steward:
(Proverbs 4:5-7) Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them. {6} Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. {7} Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
(Proverbs 8:17-21) I [wisdom] love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. {18} With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. {19} My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver. {20} I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, {21} bestowing wealth on those who love me and making their treasuries full.
(Proverbs 17:16) Of what use is money in the hand of a fool, since he has no desire to get wisdom?
(Ecclesiastes 7:11-12) Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits those who see the sun. {12} Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom preserves the life of its possessor.
(Psalm 7:15) He who digs a hole and scoops it out falls into the pit he has made.
(Proverbs 28:22) A stingy man is eager to get rich and is unaware that poverty awaits him.
(Proverbs 21:5) The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.
(Proverbs 13:11) Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow.
(Proverbs 22:7) The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
(Proverbs 22:26-27) Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts; {27} if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.
(Romans 13:8) Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.
(Proverbs 25:27-28) It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honorable to seek one’s own honor. {28} Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.
(Luke 14:28) Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?
Seek and heed wise financial counsel:
(Proverbs 12:15) The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.
(Proverbs 18:13) He who answers before listening- that is his folly and his shame.
(Proverbs 14:7) Stay away from a foolish man, for you will not find knowledge on his lips.
(Proverbs 15:22) Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.
(Proverbs 19:20) Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.
(Ecclesiastes 9:17) The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools.
Don’t fail to plan or to work because of laziness or indifference:
(Ecclesiastes 4:5) The fool folds his hands and ruins himself.
(Ecclesiastes 10:18) If a man is lazy, the rafters sag; if his hands are idle, the house leaks.
(Proverbs 10:4) Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.
(Proverbs 12:24) Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in slave labor.
(Proverbs 19:15) Laziness brings on deep sleep, and the shiftless man goes hungry.
(Proverbs 20:4) A sluggard does not plow in season; so at harvest time he looks but finds nothing.
(Proverbs 26:13-16) The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road, a fierce lion roaming the streets!” {14} As a door turns on its hinges, so a sluggard turns on his bed. {15} The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth. {16} The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer discreetly.
(Proverbs 24:30-34) I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of the man who lacks judgment; {31} thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins. {32} I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw: {33} A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest- {34} and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.
Make your focus treasures in heaven not on earth:
(Matthew 6:19-24) “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. {20} But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. {21} For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. {22} “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. {23} But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! {24} “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”
(Ecclesiastes 5:10-12) Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. {11} As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them? {12} The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep.
Don’t trust in riches and don’t be greedy:
(Psalm 62:10) Though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
(Exodus 20:23) Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.
(Psalm 49:16-20) Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases; {17} for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him. {18} Though while he lived he counted himself blessed- and men praise you when you prosper- {19} he will join the generation of his fathers, who will never see the light of life. {20} A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.
(Proverbs 13:7) One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.
(Job 31:24-28) “If I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, ‘You are my security,’ {25} if I have rejoiced over my great wealth, the fortune my hands had gained, {26} if I have regarded the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor, {27} so that my heart was secretly enticed and my hand offered them a kiss of homage, {28} then these also would be sins to be judged, for I would have been unfaithful to God on high.”
(Luke 16:13-15) “No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” {14} The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. {15} He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God’s sight.”
(Mark 4:18-20) Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; {19} but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. {20} Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop-thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown.
(James 4:1-3) What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? {2} You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. {3} When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
(Luke 12:15-21) Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” {16} And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. {17} He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ {18} “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. {19} And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”‘ {20} “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ {21} “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God.”
(Exodus 20:17) “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
(1 Timothy 6:9-11) People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. {10} For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. {11} But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
(Proverbs 11:28) Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.
(Proverbs 15:6) The house of the righteous contains great treasure, but the income of the wicked brings them trouble.
(Proverbs 16:8) Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice.
Trust God; don’t worry; be at peace:
(Psalm 23:1) The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.
(Psalm 112:5-9) Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice. {6} Surely he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. {7} He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. {8} His heart is secure, he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes. {9} He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor, his righteousness endures forever; his horn will be lifted high in honor.
(Matthew 6:31-34) So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ {32} For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. {33} But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. {34} Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
(John 14:27) Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
(Philippians 4:6-7) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. {7} And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 4:19) And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
(Psalm 118:24) This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
(1 Peter 5:7) Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you.
Be content, even if you end up with less than you’re used to having:
(Psalm 17:14-15) O LORD, by your hand save me from such men, from men of this world whose reward is in this life. You still the hunger of those you cherish; their sons have plenty, and they store up wealth for their children. {15} And I-in righteousness I will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness.
(Proverbs 30:7-9) “Two things I ask of you, O LORD; do not refuse me before I die: {8} Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. {9} Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.
(Philippians 4:11-13) I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. {12} I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. {13} I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
(Proverbs 15:16-17) Better a little with the fear of the LORD than great wealth with turmoil. {17} Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred.
(1 Timothy 6:6-8) But godliness with contentment is great gain. {7} For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. {8} But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.
(Hebrews 13:5-6) Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” {6} So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
Remember God is the owner of all:
(Psalm 24:1-2) The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; {2} for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.
(Psalm 50:10-12) For every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. {11} I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. {12} If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.
(Psalm 100:3) Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
(Haggai 2:8) ‘The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
Remember God will require an account of us as his stewards:
(Luke 12:48) From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
(Romans 14:12) So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
(1 Corinthians 4:2) Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.
Remember God is sovereign over all things:
(Proverbs 19:21) Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.
(1 Samuel 2:7-8) The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. {8} He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor. “For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s; upon them he has set the world.
(Psalm 37:16-17) Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; {17} for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.
Ask God for provision and wisdom:
(James 1:5) If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
(James 4:2) You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God.
(Matthew 7:7-11) “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. {8} For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. {9} “Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? {10} Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? {11} If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
Give generously of your present assets to God and his kingdom work:
(Leviticus 27:30) A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD.
(Deuteronomy 16:16-17) No man should appear before the LORD empty-handed: {17} Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the LORD your God has blessed you.
(Proverbs 3:9-10) Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; {10} then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
(Proverbs 11:24-25) One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. {25} A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.
(Ecclesiastes 11:1-2) Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again. {2} Give portions to seven, yes to eight, for you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.
(Malachi 3:8-11) “Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’ “In tithes and offerings. {9} You are under a curse-the whole nation of you-because you are robbing me. {10} Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. {11} I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit,” says the LORD Almighty.
(Mark 4:24-25) “Consider carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be measured to you-and even more. {25} Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.”
(Luke 6:38) Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
(2 Corinthians 8:1-15) And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. {2} Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. {3} For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, {4} they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. . . . {7} But just as you excel in everything--in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us --see that you also excel in this grace of giving. {9} For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. . . . Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. {14} At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality, {15} as it is written: “He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little.”
(2 Corinthians 9:6-15) Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. {7} Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. {8} And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. {9} As it is written: “He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” {10} Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. {11} You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. {12} This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. {13} Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. {14} And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. {15} Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
Be generous with the needy, graciously share what you have now and in hard times:
(Matthew 10:8) Freely you have received, freely give.
(Matthew 5:42) Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
(Proverbs 3:27-28) Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. {28} Do not say to your neighbor, “Come back later; I’ll give it tomorrow”- when you now have it with you.
(Psalm 37:25-26) I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. {26} They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed.
(Psalm 37:21) The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously.
(Matthew 6:12) Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
(Proverbs 11:16-18) A kindhearted woman gains respect, but ruthless men gain only wealth. {17} A kind man benefits himself, but a cruel man brings trouble on himself. {18} The wicked man earns deceptive wages, but he who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.
(Isaiah 1:17) Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.
(Leviticus 19:9-10) “‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. {10} Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the LORD your God.
(Deuteronomy 15:7-11) If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. {8} Rather be openhanded and freely lend him whatever he needs... Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. {11} There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.
(Proverbs 19:17) He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.
(Proverbs 22:9) A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.
(Proverbs 28:27) He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses.
(Luke 14:12-14) Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. {13} But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, {14} and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
(James 1:27) Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
(James 2:14-16) What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? {15} Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. {16} If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?
(1 John 3:16-19) This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. {17} If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? {18} Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. {19} This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence.
(Matthew 25:34-40) “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. {35} For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, {36} I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ {37} “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? {38} When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? {39} When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ {40} “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
(Isaiah 58:7-11) Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter- when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? {8} Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. {9} Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. “If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, {10} and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. {11} The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.
See all financial blessing as a temporary trust from God; don’t forget who it comes from and to whom it belongs; while you still have it, use it well:
(Deuteronomy 8:11-14) Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. {12} Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, {13} and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, {14} then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
(Deuteronomy 8:17-18) You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” {18} But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.
(1 Timothy 6:17-19) Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. {18} Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. {19} In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
(Revelation 3:17-18) You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. {18} I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
Face trials and hardship with eternal perspective:
(Psalm 11) In the LORD I take refuge. How then can you say to me: “Flee like a bird to your mountain. {2} For look, the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart. {3} When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” {4} The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD is on his heavenly throne. He observes the sons of men; his eyes examine them. {5} The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked and those who love violence his soul hates. {6} On the wicked he will rain fiery coals and burning sulfur; a scorching wind will be their lot. {7} For the LORD is righteous, he loves justice; upright men will see his face.
(Matthew 10:16-29) I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. {17} “Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues. {18} On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. {19} But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, {20} for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. {21} “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. {22} All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. {23} When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. {24} “A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. {25} It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub, how much more the members of his household! {26} “So do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. {27} What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. {28} Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. {29} Are not two sparrows sold for a penny ? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.
(Luke 21:20-23) “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. {21} Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. {22} For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. {23} How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.
(Hebrews 11:7) By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
(Acts 4:23-30) On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. {24} When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. {25} You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: “‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? {26} The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.’ {27} Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. {28} They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. {29} Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. {30} Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
(Philippians 1:21-23) For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. {22} If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! {23} I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far.
(2 Thessalonians 3:2) And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith.
Remember God builds character in times of trial:
(James 1:12) Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.
(1 Peter 4:12-13) Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. {13} But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
Practice generosity and interdependence in the Christian community:
(Acts 2:44-47) All the believers were together and had everything in common. {45} Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. {46} Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, {47} praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
(Acts 4:31-35) After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. {32} All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. {33} With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. {34} There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales {35} and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.
(2 Corinthians 8:13-15) Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. {14} At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality, {15} as it is written: “He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little.”
(Mark 9:41) I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.
(Luke 3:11) John answered, “The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same.”
(Romans 12:13) Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
(1 Peter 4:9) Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
(Galatians 6:9-10) Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. {10} Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
Remember our true home is not in this world but in heaven:
(John 14:1-3) “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God ; trust also in me. {2} In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. {3} And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
(Philippians 3:20) But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.
(2 Corinthians 5:20) We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
(Colossians 3:1-2) Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. {2} Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
(1 Peter 2:11) Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world . . .
(Hebrews 11:13-16) All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. {14} People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. {15} If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. {16} Instead, they were longing for a better country-a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
Pray that God will bring people to repentance and righteousness, and withhold his judgment:
(2 Chronicles 7:14) If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Genesis 18:23-33-Abraham intercedes for Sodom.
Meditate on God’s Promises and Perspectives:
(Deuteronomy 12:28) Be careful to obey all these regulations I am giving you, so that it may always go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the LORD your God.
(Psalm 33:16-22) No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. {17} A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. {18} But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, {19} to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. {20} We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. {21} In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. {22} May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you.
(Psalm 37:34-40) Wait for the LORD and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you will see it. {35} I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a green tree in its native soil, {36} but he soon passed away and was no more; though I looked for him, he could not be found. {37} Consider the blameless, observe the upright; there is a future for the man of peace. {38} But all sinners will be destroyed; the future of the wicked will be cut off. {39} The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble. {40} The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.
(Psalm 72:11-14) All kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him. {12} For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. {13} He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. {14} He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight.
(Psalm 91) He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. {2} I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” {3} Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. {4} He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. {5} You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, {6} nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. {7} A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. {8} You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. {9} If you make the Most High your dwelling- even the LORD, who is my refuge- {10} then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. {11} For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; {12} they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. {13} You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. {14} “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. {15} He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. {16} With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
(Isaiah 41:10) So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
(Isaiah 49:25) But this is what the LORD says: “Yes, captives will be taken from warriors, and plunder retrieved from the fierce; I will contend with those who contend with you, and your children I will save.
(Isaiah 54:13) All your sons will be taught by the LORD, and great will be your children’s peace.
(Jeremiah 29:11-13) “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. {12} Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. {13} You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
Appendix on God’s judgment:
I’m adding these passages to the end because I don’t want to suggest I have any inside knowledge of when God might bring judgment on America, or when the tribulation might start, when Christ may return, etc. And I certainly have no way of knowing if God will use the Year 2000 problem as part of his judgment. God might bring judgment on America next week, next year, or ten or twenty or fifty years from now-we have no way of knowing that, any more than we do the date of Christ’s return. It’s up to Him and it’s not our place to predict his timing. Still, Scripture says a great deal about God judging nations, not only Israel but other nations. The following passages are worth considering:
God’s judgment on evil nations:
(Deuteronomy 8:19-20) If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. {20} Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.
(Leviticus 26:18-28) If after all this you will not listen to me, I will punish you for your sins seven times over. . . . If you remain hostile toward me and refuse to listen to me, I will multiply your afflictions seven times over, as your sins deserve. . . . I myself will be hostile toward you and will afflict you for your sins seven times over. . . . then in my anger I will be hostile toward you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over.
(Isaiah 5:25) Therefore the Lord’s anger burns against his people; his hand is raised and he strikes them down. The mountains shake, and the dead bodies are like refuse in the streets. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.
(Isaiah 10:4) Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives or fall among the slain. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. (See also Isaiah 9:12-21)
(Isaiah 64:7) No one calls on your name or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us and made us waste away because of our sins.
(Ezekiel 26:3) Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, like the sea casting up its waves.
(Deuteronomy 28) If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. {2} All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God: {3} You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. {4} The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock-the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. {5} Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. . . . {8} The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you. . . {11} The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity-in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground-in the land he swore to your forefathers to give you. {12} The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. {13} The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. {14} Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them. {15} However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: {16} You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country. {17} Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. {18} The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. {19} You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out. {20} The LORD will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him. {21} The LORD will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess . . . {24} The LORD will turn the rain of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed. {25} The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven, and you will become a thing of horror to all the kingdoms on earth. . . . All these curses will come upon you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the LORD your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. {46} They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever. {47} Because you did not serve the LORD your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity, {48} therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the LORD sends against you. (Deuteronomy 30) When all these blessings and curses I have set before you come upon you and you take them to heart wherever the LORD your God disperses you among the nations, {2} and when you and your children return to the LORD your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you today, {3} then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you. {4} Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens, from there the LORD your God will gather you and bring you back. {5} He will bring you to the land that belonged to your fathers, and you will take possession of it. He will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers. {6} The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live. {7} The LORD your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you. {8} You will again obey the LORD and follow all his commands I am giving you today. {9} Then the LORD your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your land. The LORD will again delight in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your fathers, {10} if you obey the LORD your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. {15} See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. {16} For I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess. {17} But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, {18} I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. {19} This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live {20} and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life.
God’s judgment on the killing of children:
“Do not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molech, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 18:21)
“The LORD said . . . ‘Any Israelite or any alien living in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech must be put to death. The people of the community are to stone him. . . . by giving his children to Molech, he has defiled my sanctuary and profaned my holy name. . . . If the people of the community close their eyes when that man gives one of his children to Molech . . . I will set my face against that man and his family and will cut off from their people both him and all who follow him . . .’ “ (Leviticus 20:1-5)
“Do this so that innocent blood will not be shed in your land, which the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance, and so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.” (Deuteronomy 19:10)
“Manasseh . . . did evil in the eyes of the LORD, following the detestable practices of the nations the LORD had driven out before the Israelites. He rebuilt the high places . . . He bowed down to all the starry hosts and worshiped them. . .He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced sorcery and divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger.” (2 Kings 21:1-6)
“The LORD sent Babylonian, Aramean, Moabite and Ammonite raiders against him. He sent them to destroy Judah, in accordance with the word of the LORD proclaimed by his servants the prophets. Surely these things happened to Judah according to the Lord’s command, in order to remove them from his presence because of the sins of Manasseh and all he had done, including the shedding of innocent blood. For he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, and the LORD was not willing to forgive.” (2 Kings 24:2-4)
“The LORD said, ‘What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.’” (Genesis 4:10)
“There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood . . . .” (Proverbs 6:16-19)
“Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I will give you over to bloodshed and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you.” (Ezekiel 35:6)
The Return of Christ:
(2 Peter 3:3-18) First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. {4} They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” {5} But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. {6} By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. {7} By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. {8} But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. {9} The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. {10} But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. {11} Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives {12} as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. {13} But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. {14} So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.
