Perhaps a good novel of mine to start with would be Safely Home. Another very different and shorter choice is Lord Foulgrin's Letters, inspired by C.S. Lewis's Screwtape Letters. But I am also fond of Deception, which can be read before Deadline and Dominion even though it's a spin-off.
