Él ve una luz brillante—que, por lo general, es una señal en las películas y los libros de que alguien se está muriendo. ¿Por qué la luz? Algunas personas que afirman haber tenido una experiencia cercana a la muerte dicen que vieron una luz brillante.
La muerte es un misterio, porque los muertos no regresan y hablan de la vida en el otro lado. (Bueno, está Lázaro, el hombre que Jesús resucitó en Juan 11. Pero la Biblia nunca menciona lo que tuvo para decir acerca de la muerte.)
Hay algunas cosas que podemos saber, basándonos en lo que dice la Biblia. Después de que morimos, no cesamos de existir. Continuamos viviendo, pero en otro lugar. Los seguidores de Jesús van a vivir con él en el Cielo. Mientras estaba muriendo en la cruz, Jesús le dijo al ladrón crucificado que estaba a su lado: “Hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso” (Lucas 23:43). Es obvio que Jesús sabía que la vida después de la muerte es una realidad.
La mayor parte de este libro trata sobre el futuro Cielo, el lugar donde viviremos para siempre con Dios y con todos aquellos que conocen a Dios. Ese es el lugar donde viviremos después de nuestra resurrección y después del fin de la presente Tierra. ¿Qué es lo que quiero decir por nuestra resurrección? Cuando Jesús regrese a la Tierra—y él promete que un día lo hará—a todos los que conocen a Dios y han muerto a través de los siglos se les dará un nuevo cuerpo. Por lo general, cuando nos referimos al “Cielo,” no estamos pensando en ese futuro Cielo en el cual viviremos con Jesús en la Nueva Tierra. Con más frecuencia, queremos decir el Cielo presente, el lugar al cual van los cristianos tan pronto como mueren. Cuando tus padres te dicen: “Tu bisabuela está ahora en el Cielo,” quieren decir en el Cielo presente, como es ahora.
Sin embargo, el Cielo presente no es nuestro destino final. Aunque es un lugar maravilloso, no es el lugar para el cual fuimos creados—el lugar en el cual Dios nos promete que podremos vivir para siempre. El Cielo futuro que durará eternamente tiene un nombre que tal vez tú no esperes escuchar. ¿Has notado la frase que ya he usado varias veces? Se llama la Nueva Tierra.

What happens to us the second after we die?
In the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, there is a scene toward the end where Samwise Gamgee is drowning. He sees a bright light—usually a sign in movies and books that someone is dying. Why the light? Some people who claim to have had a near-death experience say they saw a bright light.
Death is a mystery because dead people don’t usually come back and talk about life on the other side. (Well, there was Lazarus, the guy Jesus brought back to life in John 11. But the Bible never mentions what he had to say about death.)
There are some things we can know, based on what the Bible says. After we die, we don’t cease to exist. We live on, but in another location. Followers of Jesus go to live with him in Heaven. While dying on the cross, Jesus told the thief crucified next to him, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). Obviously, Jesus knew that life after death was a reality.
Most of this book is about the future Heaven, where we will live forever with God and all those who know God. That’s the place where we will live after our resurrection and after the end of this present Earth. What do I mean by our resurrection? When Jesus returns to Earth—and he promises he will someday—everyone who knows God and has died throughout the centuries will be given a new body. (More on that in chapter six.)
Usually when we refer to “Heaven,” we’re not thinking about that future Heaven where we’ll live with Jesus on the New Earth. Most often we mean the present Heaven, the place where Christians go as soon as they die. When your parents tell you, “Your great-grandma’s now in Heaven,” they mean the present Heaven, as it is now.
The present Heaven, however, is not our final destination. Though it’s a wonderful place, it’s not the place we are made for—the place where God promises we can live forever. The future Heaven that will last forever is actually called something you might not expect. Have you noticed the phrase I’ve already used several times? It’s called the New Earth.
