¿Es Dios hombre y mujer al mismo tiempo? ¿Es Dios mi padre y madre celestial? ¿Fueron las mujeres hechas a la imagen de Dios? Cuando el hombre y la mujer se unen en matrimonio, ¿son una imagen más completa y cercana a la de Dios?

Dios es trino: Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. Tanto Padre como Hijo son términos explícitamente masculinos. El Espíritu Santo podría verse como un término neutro, aunque sus roles de consolación y alimentación sugieren atributos que solemos asociar con el género femenino.

El hecho de que dos miembros de la trinidad sean representados en términos masculinos no quiere decir que Dios lo sea (de la forma en que entendemos el término). Tanto Dios el Padre como Dios el Espíritu Santo carecen de cuerpo (y por lo tanto, en rigor, no son hombres). Dios el Hijo sí es un hombre: él no sólo fue masculino en la encarnación, sino que sigue siendo eternamente hombre en su cuerpo resucitado.

Génesis 1:27 dice: “Dios creó al hombre a imagen Suya, a imagen de Dios lo creó; varón y hembra los creó”. La palabra “hombre” en este verso es el término genérico para humanidad, no es un término específico de masculinidad. Él creó tanto al hombre como a la mujer con emociones, voluntad, alma e intelecto. Dios creó tanto al hombre como a la mujer igualmente a su imagen. Este es el primer fundamento para la igualdad de géneros. Es importante reconocer que la igualdad no significa uniformidad. Dios les ha dado dones de igual manera a hombres y mujeres y son igualmente valiosos para él; sin embargo, al mismo tiempo hay diferencias.

Es común, si acaso no es natural, ver a Dios a través de los ojos de la humanidad; sin embargo, es mejor ver a la humanidad, en la medida de lo posible, con los ojos de Dios. Él existe antes que el hombre y la mujer. Él se refiere a sí mismo como Padre. Por consiguiente, ¿quién soy yo para darle otro nombre? Es verdad que Dios algunas veces usa analogías e ilustraciones de su obra que son predominantemente femeninas, pero nunca se refiere a sí mismo como mujer, ni se encarna en un cuerpo femenino.

Ver a Dios como madre se acerca peligrosamente a muchas creencias y cultos paganos; no es una visión que la Escritura apoye. Dios representa cualidades que nosotros atribuimos a las madres: amoroso, compasivo, lleno de gracia, protector, etc., pero él eligió revelarse y referirse a sí mismo en términos masculinos por medio de su Palabra a la humanidad. Dios creó la maternidad, pero la Biblia no fomenta que nos dirijamos a él como Madre.

Por supuesto, las mujeres son completamente capaces de relacionarse con Dios tan fácilmente como lo hacen los hombres, porque ambos son creados igualmente a la imagen de Dios, y Dios sabe todo (y es quien más sabe).

Después de crear todo, incluyendo a hombres y mujeres, Dios (la trinidad) vio que todo era muy bueno (Génesis 1:31). Él podría haber hecho al ser humano como un solo sexo o haber creado un sinnúmero de sexos, pero creó específicamente dos para que representaran y portaran su imagen. Hombres y mujeres, cada uno individualmente, portan la imagen de Dios. Un esposo y una esposa, antes de casarse, llevan la imagen de Dios en la soltería, y una vez que se casan, lo hacen en el matrimonio —aunque debido a que Dios se refleja tanto en la masculinidad como en la femineidad, el esposo y la esposa juntos pueden mostrar una imagen más plena de Dios que la que cualquiera de ellos pudo mostrar antes del matrimonio—. No obstante, esto no debería llevar a tener una mala imagen de la soltería. Si el matrimonio llevara a la humanidad a parecerse más a Dios, la Escritura no exaltaría la soltería como una elección de estilo de vida honorable con ciertas ventajas (1 Corintios 7:8).

Darse cuenta de que las diferentes fortalezas de hombres y mujeres fueron igualmente diseñadas (aunque luego cayeran) a la imagen de un Dios perfecto es fascinante y animante. Que los hombres sean hombres, y las mujeres, mujeres. Trabajemos juntos para reflejar la gloria de Dios.

Is God both man and woman combined?

Is God both man and woman combined? Is he my heavenly father and mother? Are women made in God’s image? Are man and woman joined in marriage a more complete or closer image of God?

Answer from Julia Stager (EPM staff) and Randy Alcorn:

God is triune. He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Father and Son are both explicitly masculine terms. The Holy Spirit could be viewed as gender neutral, through his comforting and nurturing roles suggest attributes we usually associate with females.  

That two of the three members of the trinity are depicted in masculine terms, does not make God male (as we understand the term). God the Father and God the Holy Spirit are both without body (and therefore not, strictly speaking, male). God the Son is a man. He not only was masculine in the incarnation, but he remains eternally masculine in his resurrection body.

Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” The word “man” in this verse is the generic term for mankind, not a specific term of masculinity. He created both man and woman with emotions, will, soul, and intellect. God created both man and woman equally in his image. This is the primary basis for equality of the genders. It’s important to realize that equality is not sameness. Men and women are equally gifted by God and equally valuable, but there are still differences.

It is common, if not natural, to view God through the lens of humanity—but it’s best to view humanity, as much as possible, through the lens of God. He existed before man and woman. He refers to himself as Father. Who am I to rename him? It’s true that God sometimes uses analogies and illustrations of His work that are predominately feminine, but never does He refer to himself as female, nor take on a female incarnation.

Viewing God as mother treads dangerously close to many pagan/cult beliefs, and is not a view encouraged by Scripture. He represents qualities we ascribe to mothers i.e. loving, compassionate, full of grace, protective, etc. but chose to reveal and refer to himself in masculine terms in his word to humanity. God invented motherhood, but the Bible does not encourage us to address God as Mother.

Of course, females are fully able to relate to God as easily as males because they are equally created in God’s image, and God knows all (and best).

After creating everything, including males and females, God (the trinity) saw that it was very good (Genesis 1:31).  He could have made humans of only one sex, or created an infinite number of sexes, but he specifically created two sexes to represent and bear his image. Males and females each individually bear the image of God. A husband and wife before their marriage bear the image of God in singleness and once married bear the image of God in their marriage, though because God is reflected in both masculinity and femininity, the husband and wife together may demonstrate a fuller picture of God than either of them did before the marriage. This however should not be seen as a poor reflection on singles. If marriage led humanity into greater likeness of God, Scripture would not uplift singleness as an honorable lifestyle choice with certain advantages (1 Corinthians 7:8).

It is both fascinating and encouraging to realize that the different strengths of males and females are equally fashioned (though fallen) from the image of a perfect God. May men be men and women be women, and may we work together to reflect His glory.
