Question from a reader:

I have a young family member who is set to inherit some money soon, with the stipulation that he successfully complete a personal finance course. Unfortunately, he has a history of making poor financial decisions. I am trustee on the trust, and am helping choose the course. Would you recommend one of your books on finances and stewardship, or another resource?

Answer from Eternal Perspective Ministries:

That’s a tough situation and your concern for your loved one is certainly understandable. You didn’t mention where his heart is at in relation to the Lord but I’m gathering from what you've shared that he doesn’t currently have a close relationship with Him. Certainly, that is the foundational need he has: to know and trust Jesus.

Randy has said what it sounds like you already know: “When you’re walking with God, inheriting money can be a blessing. When you’re not walking with God, often money will only fund your sin.”

Randy’s books on money really focus in on the giving part of stewardship. While there are certainly things in them that would benefit your loved one (like in his book Managing God's Money), we are thinking that you need something more basic that covers the full range of topics related to finances. Randy suggested Howard Dayton's ministry, Compass. This study might be a fit: Navigating Your Finances God’s Way Video Study.

God bless you as you invest in his life.
