I’ve mentioned that Nanci’s journal she kept over the last four years of her cancer contains many Charles Haddon Spurgeon quotes. A few months ago she wrote down some profound sentences from this sermon by Spurgeon, titled “Safe Shelter.” It seemed right to share more of it with you.

Today’s blog is excerpted from my book We Shall See God. It’s the first of 50 entries drawn from Charles Spurgeon’s sermons on Heaven, and it’s entitled “Dying Is But Going Home.” It seems fitting to share right now.

This prayer (with updated language) is from the February 15 morning entry of Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening: Daily Readings. There’s hardly any man outside of Scripture itself who speaks to me like Spurgeon does. 

“Charles Spurgeon loved Christmas. In fact, he once said, 'I like Christmas; I wish it came six times a year.' He liked the generosity of 'those who give to the poor,' and as for the cheer of the season exclaimed 'I would not stop a smile. God forbid me!'”

I’d been a pastor for ten years before I discovered the writings of Charles Spurgeon, and then I couldn’t get enough of him. I enjoyed these writings from Spurgeon on the gospel and Jesus, which I found through the excellent Logos software.

During this global pandemic, depression and suicidal thoughts are on the rise. That makes the release of the short book Encouragement for the Depressed, with a sermon from Charles Spurgeon, timely.

In the following introduction to his sermon on Psalm 119:103, Charles Spurgeon encourages his listeners to actively “taste” God’s Word. May we too experience the sweetness of Scripture—today and every day!

Charles Spurgeon said, "As the furious storm gives place to the clear sunshine, so the night of weeping precedes the morning of joy. Sorrow the harbinger; gladness the prince it ushers in."

Do you consider yourself an optimist or a pessimist? We have no guarantees about how our circumstances will turn out in this life. But when it comes to eternity, Christians have every reason for optimism—we know how the story will end.
