The major Christian creeds state, “I believe in the resurrection of the body.” But I’ve found in many conversations that Christians tend to spiritualize the resurrection of the dead, effectively denying it. Our incorrect thinking about bodily resurrection stems from our failure to understand the environment in which resurrected people will live—the New Earth.

Question from a reader: In your book Heaven you say that our bodies on the New Earth will be the same bodies that we have now, but they will be “upgraded” and “glorified”. But 2 Corinthians 5:1 talks about our earthly tents being destroyed. How does this harmonize with your thoughts about our eternal bodies?

God’s intention for humans was that we would occupy the whole Earth and reign over it, to God’s glory. This reigning, expanding, culture-enriching purpose of God for mankind on Earth was never revoked or abandoned. 

The food chain may seem natural to us, but I believe it violates God’s original design. No more curse and death means no more food chain involving living creatures. As radical a shift as that may seem, it will likely be a return to God’s original design.

Someday this upside-down world will be turned right side up. Nothing in all eternity will turn it back again. If we are wise, we will spend our brief lives on earth positioning ourselves for the turn.
