One of the biggest misconceptions about giving is that the money we part with to help the needy or to spread the gospel just disappears and is gone forever. While we hope others will benefit from it, we’re quite sure we won’t. We even buy into the devil’s lie that giving will rob us of the good life. We couldn’t be more wrong.

Are you living the good life? If not, I know you wish you were. People define the good life in different ways, but everybody wants to live it. After all, what’s the alternative? Living a bad life? A pointless, guilt-ridden, or miserable life? We’d all choose the good life any day, and yet we often don’t understand how to make it happen.

I’m glad more pastors and teachers are speaking out against prosperity theology. One such voice is Costi Hinn, the nephew of faith healer Benny Hinn. Costi is right to point out that we should be careful to speak the truth boldly with grace, wisdom, and humility, and with the end goal of pointing people to the saving power of the true gospel.

The KonMari Method can be a helpful tool for many people—including followers of Jesus. It can help us simplify and free us to appreciate what we already own. It can help us say “no” to buying unnecessary items. It can be a good way to start conversations with our neighbors and friends. But we can share something even greater than the KonMari method. It’s not a stopping place, but rather, a starting one.

Last month Holland Christian Schools in Holland, Michigan welcomed back to campus a graduate of their school—Kirk Cousins, quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, and former QB of the Washington Redskins. I was asked to join Kirk in doing a fundraiser for the school, where he interviewed me about various topics close to both my heart and his.

I first became aware of tithing as a teenager when my pastor preached on the importance of supporting the local congregation. His sermon drew on Galatians 6:6: “Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor.”

When God’s people were robbing Him by withholding tithes and offerings, He said, “Test me in this…and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it” (Malachi 3:10).
