Our view of heaven is comparable to standing out in a hallway and staring past an open door into a dark room. Getting a grasp of the resurrection and the New Earth is like stepping in and flipping on a light switch. Suddenly the shadowy images become recognizable…while our eyes have to adjust to the light, everything starts to make sense.

In a recent interview, Christopher Hitchens, the fervent atheist and author of God Is Not Great, showed he has a much clearer understanding of what it means to be a Christian than the Unitarian minister, who claims to be a Christian, interviewing him.

What, after all, is more universal to human experience than suffering? And what is more important than the perspective we bring to it?

Many religions, including Buddhism and Hinduism, picture the afterlife as vague and intangible. Christianity specifically refutes this notion. Biblical Christianity doesn’t give up on humanity or the earth.

Though worldview and theology can be distinguished from each other in secondary ways, in the primary sense, I think they are not only inseparable, but practically synonymous.

I think that it’s impossible to teach theology without teaching worldview and impossible to teach worldview without teaching theology, and in particular systematic theology.

If there is a plane crash in which all 345 passengers die isn’t it accurate to say “Many died in that plane crash”? (If Christ died for everyone, for billions of people, that certainly qualifies as many.) Now if someone said, “many, but not all, died in that plane crash” that would be different.

A person may know all the facts of the Bible and believe them to be true and still spend eternity in Hell. A person may believe that God exists, that Jesus lived, died, and was resurrected from the dead. A person can be very religious and still not know Christ.

God does not compel anyone–He offers. He has made sure that all know that He exists, and He has provided the answers for all those who seek.

We have so emphasized the idea of never acting in our own self-interest, that we ignore the continuous appeals of Scripture to be motivated by the fact that following our Lord is not only right, but smart. And sin is not only wrong, but stupid.
